EXPERIMENT 7 To test the presence of UNSATURATION Date:
Aim:- To test the presence of UNSATURATION
Procedure :-
ALKALINE KMnO4 TEST (BAEYER S TEST) Dissolve a part of the given compound in about 2ml of water or acetone in a test tube and add 1-2 drops of 1% of ALKALINE KMnO4 and shake | Decolouration of pink colour of KMnO4
| Presence of unsaturation
|
CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION:- (UNSATURATION means presence of DOUBLE OR TRIPLE BOND between C atoms) BROMINE TEST:- In this test, the orange-red colour of bromine solution disappears due to unsaturated double or triple bonds. When all the pi bonds are broken complete addition reaction takes place REACTIONS:-
|
Test with bromine water: Take small amount of the organic compound in a test tube add 2 ml of distilled water to dissolve it. To this solution add few drops of bromine water and shake it well. | (i) Orange Yellow Bromine water decolorized.
| (i) Substance is Unsaturated.
|
II) ALKALINE KMnO4 TEST (BAEYER S TEST) In this test the pink colour of KMnO4 disappears due to the oxidation addition reaction of unsaturated compounds REACTIONS:-
|
RESULT:- The given organic compound is unsaturated. (contains double or triple bond )
