Class 12 Record Experiment 9

(START WRITING  IN RHS and continue writing using both sides LHS and RHS )

EXPERIMENT 9         To test the presence of phenol                                     Date:

Aim:-

To analyse the given organic compound and identify and confirm the functional group present in it

Sl. No.

EXPERIMENT

OBSERVATION

INFERENCE

PRELIMINARY TESTS

1.

Colour noted

Light Brown colour

Phenol may be present

2.

odour noted

carbolic odour

May be phenol

3.

Test with litmus paper:

A little of the substance is placed on moist litmus paper

Blue litmus turns red

May be Carboxylic acid (or) phenol which are acidic in nature

TEST FOR ALIPHATIC OR AROMATIC

1.

A little of the substance is taken in a nickel spatula and shown to flame.

Burnt with smoky

flame(sooty)

Presence of aromatic substance

TEST FOR UNSATURATION

1.

Test with bromine water:

Take small amount of the organic compound in a test tube add 2 ml of distilled water to dissolve it. To this solution add few drops of bromine water and shake it well.

decolorization

with the formation of white precipitate.

Presence of aromatic amine or phenol.

Phenol gives a white precipitate of 2,4,6 tri bromo phenol

Chemistry

  1. IDENTIFICATION TEST FOR PHENOLS -

1.

NEUTRAL FERRIC CHLORIDE TEST:-

Take 1ml of neutral ferric chloride solution in a clean test tube and 2-3 drops of the liquid compound (1g if solid)

Violet colouration produced

No characteristic reaction

Presence of phenolic group

Absence of phenol  group

Chemistry

CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR PHENOL

2.

AZODYE TEST fpr phenol :-

Take three test tubes A, B and C. In test tube A, dissolve about 2ml of aniline in 2ml of dilute hydrochloric acid. In test tube B, prepare an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite.

In test tube C, dissolve 1ml of organic compound (phenol) in dilute NaOH. Place all the three test tubes in ice bath

Now add sodium nitrite solution to test tube A and the resulting solution is added to the test tube C.

Formation of orange dye

Presence of phenol

Chemistry

RESULT :

The given organic compound is identified and confirmed as Aromatic alcohol
