odour noted

smell of vinegar (pungent smell)

May be carboxylic acid ethaonoic acid

3.

Test with litmus paper:

A little of the substance is placed on moist litmus paper

Blue litmus turns red

May be Carboxylic acid (or) phenol which are acidic in nature

TEST FOR ALIPHATIC OR AROMATIC

1.

A little of the substance is taken in a nickel spatula and shown to flame.

Burnt with a non-smoky flame

Presence of Aliphatic

substance

TEST FOR UNSATURATION

1.

Test with bromine water:

Take small amount of the organic compound in a test tube add 2 ml of distilled water to dissolve it. To this solution add few drops of bromine water and shake it well.

No decolourisation.

Substance is saturated

  1. IDENTIFICATION  TEST FOR ACIDS

SODIUM HYDROGEN CARBONATE

NaHCO3 Test

To 1ml of organic liquid in a test tube, add a pinch of sodium hydrogen carbonate

A  brisk effervescence

Presence of CARBOXYLIC ACID group

Chemistry of the reaction :

CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR ACIDS

1.

Esterification reaction:

Take 1 ml or a pinch of an organic compound in a clean test tube. Add 1 ml of ethyl alcohol and 4 - 5 drops of Conc. H2SO4 . Warm the reaction mixture. Then pour the mixture in to a beaker containing cold water

A pleasant fruity odour is noted when poured into beaker containing cold water and note the smell.

Presence of carboxylic group confirmed
