EXPERIMENT 12 To test the presence of carboxylic acid Date:
Aim:-
To analyse the given organic compound and identify and confirm the functional group present in it
Sl. No. | EXPERIMENT | OBSERVATION | INFERENCE |
PRELIMINARY TESTS |
1. | Colour noted | No characteristic colour | Absence of phenol and aniline |
2.
| odour noted | smell of vinegar (pungent smell) | May be carboxylic acid ethaonoic acid |
3. | Test with litmus paper: A little of the substance is placed on moist litmus paper | Blue litmus turns red
| May be Carboxylic acid (or) phenol which are acidic in nature |
TEST FOR ALIPHATIC OR AROMATIC |
1. | A little of the substance is taken in a nickel spatula and shown to flame.
| Burnt with a non-smoky flame | Presence of Aliphatic substance |
TEST FOR UNSATURATION |
1. | Test with bromine water: Take small amount of the organic compound in a test tube add 2 ml of distilled water to dissolve it. To this solution add few drops of bromine water and shake it well.
| No decolourisation.
| Substance is saturated |
IDENTIFICATION TEST FOR ACIDS
|
1. | SODIUM HYDROGEN CARBONATE NaHCO3 Test To 1ml of organic liquid in a test tube, add a pinch of sodium hydrogen carbonate | A brisk effervescence
| Presence of CARBOXYLIC ACID group
|
Chemistry of the reaction :
|
CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR ACIDS |
1.
| Esterification reaction: Take 1 ml or a pinch of an organic compound in a clean test tube. Add 1 ml of ethyl alcohol and 4 - 5 drops of Conc. H2SO4 . Warm the reaction mixture. Then pour the mixture in to a beaker containing cold water | A pleasant fruity odour is noted when poured into beaker containing cold water and note the smell. |
Presence of carboxylic group confirmed |

RESULT :
The given organic compound is identified and confirmed as
Aliphatic saturated carboxylic acid (ethanoic acid or acetic acid)
