EXPERIMENT 13 To test the presence of amine Date:
Aim:-
To analyse the given organic compound and identify and confirm the functional group present in it
Sl. No. | EXPERIMENT | OBSERVATION | INFERENCE |
PRELIMINARY TESTS |
1. | Colour noted | Black brown colour
| Aniline may be present |
2.
| odour noted | Fish odour
| May be amine |
3. | Test with litmus paper: A little of the substance is placed on moist litmus paper | Red litmus turns blue
| May be an amine which is basic in nature |
TEST FOR ALIPHATIC OR AROMATIC |
1. | A little of the substance is taken in a nickel spatula and shown to flame.
| Burnt with smoky flame(sooty)
| Presence of aromatic substance |
TEST FOR UNSATURATION |
1. | Test with bromine water: Take small amount of the organic compound in a test tube add 2 ml of distilled water to dissolve it. To this solution add few drops of bromine water and shake it well.
| decolorization with the formation of white precipitate. | Presence of aromatic amine or phenol. Aniline reacts with bromine water to give 2,4,6 tribromoaniline which is a white precipitate |

IDENTIFICATION TEST FOR AMINE |
1. | AZODYE TEST :- Take three test tubes A, B and C. In test tube A, dissolve about 0.2g of the compound ( aniline) in 2ml of dilute hydrochloric acid. In test tube B, prepare an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite. In test tube C, dissolve 1ml of phenol in dilute NaOH. Place all the three test tubes in ice bath Now add sodium nitrite solution to test tube A and the resulting solution is added to the test tube C. | Formation of a red or orange dye
| Presence of primary aromatic amino group (Ar-NH2 group)

CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR ANILINE |
6 | CARBYLAMINE TEST:- Take about 0.2g of solid KOH in a clean dry test tube and add 2ml of ethanol. Warm the test tube until the pellets dissolve. To this add a few drops of chloroform, small amount of the compound and warm gently | An unpleasant odour from reaction mixture | Presence of primary amine |
